從 13~14 世紀，歐陸人們受到寒流的侵襲，於是用拼布製作禦寒的棉被。隨著時代潮流進步，拼布也經歷了好幾次的變遷，由實用性走向裝飾性，就成為今日美式拼布的起源。
1620 年由於物資缺乏，婦女們只能用剩餘不同的碎布片來拼接製作，這就是百納被的由來。當人們的生活漸漸富裕後，就開始製作起較為昂貴的拼布作品，至 1971 年，有對夫婦在紐約的 Witny 美術館舉行拼布展，才燃起美國人的拼布的復古風潮。從此，在美國人的心目中，拼布是屬於優美的意識與創作藝術，更是互助的象徵，而他們也將拼布作品視做傳家之寶，一代一代的傳承下去。
